Description:

The Emud Favorit UT is a small kitchen radio should be a cheap radio, so less tubes are used and the electrical circuit is also different, compared with the common super hetero-dyne radios of that era.
This radio is technically different as the usual radios, so it makes it interesting to have it in the collection, even if the performance isn't well.
The left knob is the on/off switch with the AM gain control, done by the 50+50 pF variable capacitor. This must be adjusted just below the point of oscillating.
The right front knob is the tuning.
The right back knob is the gain control, done by the 20K potentiometer. This potentiometer has a turning range of 90°.
At the back you find also a knob, which reduces strong AM radio signals on the A1 antenna connection.

First of all, the LW and MW part is an Audion receiver, which was common in the thirties. The AM detection is grid detection. There is no Automatic Gain Control, so the gain and volume control is adjustable by the 20K potentiometer at the cathode section of the ECH81.
On AM, the triode section of the ECH81 works as a regenerative (Audion) receiver.
The FM receiver is a normal super hetero-dyne receiver, but the detection is done by edge detection in stead of the usual ratio detector. On FM, the triode section of the ECH81 act then as a audio pre-amplifier.

The loudspeaker inside isn't original and is a Philips type.

Repairs:

After fixing the power supply and replacing the suspicious capacitors, the radio starts to play.

Performance:

The AM and FM reception isn't sensitive, so a good antenna need to be used.
The audio quality is just neutral.
For some reason, the audio volume on the FM can only a little bit adjusted by the right back knob.

Disclaimer:

The build in power transformer is only meant for the heater voltage of 6.3V~ and the different primary voltages. The high voltage supply is directly taken from the mains power, which means the radio chassis carries the 220 Volt~ mains voltage, which is very dangerous. Before making any repairs on the radio or playing the radio without the back plate, use a safety transformer with separate windings. The insulation of the windings must withstand at least 4000 Volts AC as well as a low leakage current of 0.5 mA~ or less.
